“Does starting a home business require a huge investment?”

One of the greatest benefits of starting a home-based business is the low cost of entry. When I began my career in network marketing almost 20 years ago, I had very little money. I did the best I could with what I had. The desire and willingness to get to work are far more valuable to you than the infusion of cash into your business.

Almost anyone can afford to get themselves into a home business. Most network marketing companies have extremely low start-up costs, usually under $500. However, the low cost of entry can also lead to people not treating their businesses like a “real” business. My recommendation is that you treat your new business as if you have literally invested a million dollars into it. You don’t find too many people who have invested tens of thousands of dollars into a franchise just to give business a “try” or to become absentee managers—they have a lot of money invested in their business and they treat it as such. Imagine yourself in that position: if you invested one million dollars into your business, would you show up to work every day? Would you treat it seriously? Would you do everything you possibly could to make it work? My guess is that you would. So…start treating it like that.

The most important element in building a direct sales or network marketing business is that you prospect people for your product and/or business opportunity. That said, it is important that you clearly understand how powerful money can be as a tool. While you can start and run a home business on a shoestring budget, you can also operate one on a larger budget. Money infused into your business can buy you advertising, leads, the ability to market on a larger scale, the ability to hire part-time or full-time assistants if you need them, as well as other beneficial items that can help you propel your business forward. I highly recommend that you take the time to plan, set some money aside, and use it wisely in operating your enterprise. You’ll be better off by becoming well-equipped with some critically important business items, such as a cordless phone with a headset, a fax machine, a computer and printer, an organizer or planner (to keep track of your prospects and customers), as well as other business tools like websites, brochures, and other sales aids or literature used in promoting your business.

My final suggestion is that you take action. Regardless of where you are financially right now, the important thing is that you make a commitment to take your business seriously and focus on doing it until. What do I mean by until? I mean exactly this: Run your business until you succeed and accept nothing less. People who quit on the way to their destinations never get where they want to go.  ♦
