Market Yourself First: An Intro to Social Media for Home Business

A Checklist for Home Businesses Going ‘Social’ on the Web

‘Social media’ started as a buzz word in 2009 when advertisers hesitantly accepted it into the business-world. In 2010, we will see a more refined approach to sharing business with the world via Facebook, Twitter, My Space, etc. Trends are emerging on those doing it well and those who aren’t. If you aren’t ‘online’ you are neither, and therefore, you aren’t reaping the benefits of these marketing channels.

Get started in social media with this handy checklist for Facebook and Twitter. This questionnaire will force you to take a hard look at where the internet meets your marketing.

Facebook Marketing

Is your account a business account or a personal account? Do you know the difference?

Is your account using a name that does not apply to a person?
For example, using ‘Bill’s Apple Products’ instead of ‘Bill Smith’?

Does your business have a group or a fan page? Do you know the difference?

Is the admin of your page a real person or a fake name you’ve created to keep it anonymous?

Is you blog loaded onto your Facebook page automatically?

Do your updates go live to Twitter or other services?

Twitter Marketing

Do you Twitter? And more importantly, is that a sentence? Not everyone uses Twitter to talk about their day-to-day activities, but maintaining a presence can be a great (and free) asset for your business.

Does your username reflect your business?

Does your description list the services you offer?

Do you list a website where people can learn more about you?

Do you load Twitter responses onto your website?

Congratulations, you’ve completed our checklist for home businesses’ ‘going social’ on the web. Keep your answers handy and stay tuned to future articles on setting up your social media accounts properly, best practices, and more on HomeBusinessConnection.com
